Boulangerie breakfast with Diana, followed by sunrise wander to the castle and second breakfast at the castle, farewells to Osvaldo, Peter and Daryll, hello and goodbye to Valerie, another Canadian, neither of them aware of their famous compatriot Jordan Peterson, then post-dental train trip to famous fishing village of Fuseta for vegetarian lunch at Green Spirit, closed on Tuesdays, so fish it is after all in the spirit of vague'un ism ... friendly couple seeming to enjoy their work and looking forward to next month off ...
Faro train arrives in good time for a walk the 4 km to the airport, quiet off season and routine humiliation of customers at security check is low key ... followed by weird wander through Duty Free, full of bright lights and shiny things we can buy to make us feel better ... disturbing image of ancient pop star with a street in Albufeira named after him adds to the surreality ...
Light and sometimes trite book by Pete McCarthy rewards persistence with observations of corrupting influence of too much tourism ... insight on demise of Once True Faith and rather cruel lampooning of various nationalities ... all set in the booming Ireland of twenty years ago ...
Flight uneventful, arrival in Newcastle a little cooler than Faro ... late arrival means airport hotel and all day to find Stanhope tomorrow ... good to be home ...
